General Requirements

Who Can Foster?

At TLC Fostering, we believe that great foster parents come from a wide range of backgrounds. There is no single “type” of person who can foster, what matters most is your ability to provide a safe, stable and caring home for a child or young person, particularly those with additional or complex needs. We welcome individuals, couples and families from all walks of life. Whether you are single, married, in a partnership, working, retired or at home full-time, your personal qualities, values and life experience are what truly matter. Experience in parenting, childcare, health or social care can be beneficial, but it is not essential. We provide full training and ongoing support to help you feel confident and prepared.

Requirements and Qualities We Look For

Fostering is a rewarding and life-changing role, but it also comes with responsibility. To ensure the best outcomes for both you and the children in your care, there are some general requirements and qualities we look for when considering prospective foster parents. You must be over the age of 21, have a spare bedroom available for a foster child, and have the legal right to live and remain in the UK.

You do not need to own your home, many foster carers rent successfully—but you will need permission from your landlord if applicable. What’s most important is that your home is safe, welcoming and suitable for a child or young person. As a foster parent, you will need to demonstrate patience, resilience, empathy and a genuine commitment to supporting children who may have experienced trauma, uncertainty or complex challenges. Strong communication skills and the ability to work as part of a wider professional team are also key.

Training, Assessment and Support

All prospective foster carers will go through a thorough assessment process, which includes background checks such as an enhanced DBS check, references and a home assessment. This process ensures the safety and wellbeing of the children placed in your care, while also giving you the opportunity to fully understand the fostering role.

At TLC Fostering, we specialise in supporting children and young people with disabilities and complex medical needs. This means a willingness to learn, adapt and develop new skills is essential. Our expert team provides comprehensive training and ongoing guidance to equip you with everything you need. Above all, we are looking for people who can offer stability, understanding and a nurturing environment where children can feel valued and supported. If you feel you have the space, compassion and commitment to make a difference, fostering with TLC could be an incredibly fulfilling journey—for both you and the children whose lives you help shape.
